Introduction and Strategy
Written by @kendoVT
Golfers head halfway across the world this week for the CIMB Classic at TPC Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. This is a 78 man no cut event. There are multiple strategies that can be used for DFS in these types of situations. Leaving money on the table is one viable strategy for GPPs. Also going with a stars and scrubs approach is always popular. A balanced lineup will be the contrarian play as most people will try and stick as many high priced players as they can in their lineups due to upside. I recently read an article by Logan Harper in which he stated that a good way to get as much upside as possible in no cut events is to look at Vegas odds. Making lineups with the highest odds to win based on Vegas lines is not something I’ve thought of before but seems to make sense.
This is the fifth time this course has been used for this tournament (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016) so there is a bit of course history here and this course was the host for the Malaysian Open on the Euro Tour from 2010-2015. Justin Thomas is the 2 time defending champion after he shot a course record -26 two years ago and -23 last year. The previous two years Ryan Moore came away with the victory and Gary Woodland finished second. Weather plays a very big part in this tournament as it is very hot and humid in Malaysia this time of year. Thunderstorms can pop up out of no where and this has been the case all four years here. Almost all the rounds played at TPC Kuala Lumpur have used preferred lies (lift, clean, and place) and with rain in the forecast for some of the week, it wouldn’t surprise me if it is the case again this year. Just a reminder, because of the time zone difference the lineup lock for DraftKings isWEDNESDAY at around 7pm. Get your lineups in early!
TPC Kuala Lumpur is a 7,000 yard par 72 course with four par 5s and four par 3s. The course plays slightly longer than the yardage suggests due to the wet conditions and lack of roll out on fairways.
That’s it for this week. Sorry for the shorter write up but the delay in DK pricing put me on a time crunch. We’ll be back to normal next week. For more PGA DFS knowledge check out my Podcast.
