The PGA Tour heads to Playa del Carmen, Mexico for the OHL Classic from El Cameleon Golf Course at Mayakoba Resort. There are 132 golfers to choose from on DraftKings this week with the Top 70 and ties making it to the weekend. The tournament has been played at El Cameleon since 2007 so there is a good amount of course history here. Unlike last week, there hasn’t been too many first time winners and veterans have dominated the winner’s circle. Eight of the last ten winners have been over the age of 30. Experience at this course doesn’t look like a precursor to success as four of the last six winners here won on their first attempt at the course. This course doesn’t necessarily favor bombers off the tee as the only previous winners inside the Top 100 in driving distance were Harris English and Charley Hoffman. The year English won, the course played much longer due to prolonged wet conditions and they used preferred lies that year as well. The winning score is usually in the high teens so birdies are a must but with all the trouble around the course, this layout can play tough, especially if the wind blows hard. Since the course is situated around the Caribbean Sea, there is definitely a chance that the weather could be a factor. Looking at the current forecast, it looks as if rain will affect the tournament as it is forecasted to be soggy on Thursday, Friday, and Sunday. Winds don’t look too detrimental but as we all know, weather forecasts can’t be trusted 100%. If you are looking for correlated courses to El Cameleon check out TPC Kuala Lumpur (CIMB Classic) and Coco Beach in Puerto Rico (Puerto Rico Open) since both of those courses use seaside paspalum grass on the greens. Also take a peak Harbour Town Golf Links (RBC Heritage) as it is another short par 71 with narrow fairways.
