Introduction and Strategy

The PGA Tour makes its return to America as golfers play the Shriners Hospital for Children Open from TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas, Nevada. After a few of weeks of no cut events, we get back to normal as 140 or so golfers tee it up and only the Top 70 and ties get to play the weekend. This tournament has been around since the early 80s and has gone through many different iterations of tournament play (used to be a 90 hole tournament played on 3 or 4 courses) and many Vegas courses have been used at this event. TPC Summerlin has hosted this event exclusively since 2008 so when doing your research on course history this week, it would be prudent to start at the 2008 tournament and move on from there. This tournament has been known as a place where many golfers get their first Tour win. Eleven of the last sixteen winners here were maiden winners not including Rod Pampling who got his first Tour win in over a decade last year. Since the tourney moved exclusively to TPC Summerlin, five of the nine winners got their first Tour victory here including two of the last three years with Smylie Kaufman winning in 2015 and Ben Martin winning the year before. There are also quite a few golfers with local ties to the course including Kevin Na, Ryan Moore, Charley Hoffman, Chad Campbell, and Scott Piercy. Experience at the course is not necessarily needed as we saw in 2015 with Smylie but it sure doesn’t hurt as these five golfers have 2 wins and a combined 13 Top 10s since 2008 here. Looks like weather will be a factor again just like the last two weeks in Asia. Winds are expected to reach 20 mph in Vegas with higher gusts. Don’t expect the winning score to reach the -20s as we saw last year. Birdies will still be abundant but if the wind forecast stays the same or gets worse as the week goes on, expect a few more bogeys on golfers cards.
